Welcome back! Chemistry and Biochemistry WQ Events Coming up.

Hello Students, Alumni, and Friends! Welcome to 2020!

We are very excited for the new year and several events that are coming up soon. First, we will be having a CHE Lab Open House on the 3rd and 4th floors of McGowan South On Thursday, January 16th from 12-2 pm. Labs will be open and have faculty or students in them to chat about the research they do. This is a great time to learn about research in the department and think about groups you might be interested in joining.

Secondly, If you are a first-year student interested in research, also check out the “Rising STEM Scholars” Program open house Friday January 17th in McGowan South 103 at 1 pm.

Finally, if you are interested in Studying abroad, Dr. Grice and his BIO collaborator Dr. Bystriansky will be having info sessions this coming Monday and Tuesday about their study abroad program to Spain. See the flier below:

Two upcoming events: oSTEM meeting and Rising STEM Scholars Info Session

We’ve previously posted about oSTEM, and we wanted to highlight a seminar they are having tomorrow, where Dr. Bruce will be giving a seminar. The flier is shown below.

In addition, you may have seen fliers around for the Rising STEM Scholars program. This program is an opportunity for first-year students to conduct research in small groups with CSH faculty. There will an info session Thursday Nov 21 from 3-4 pm in McGowan South 103.

Undergraduate Research Showcase This Friday

The 17th Annual Science and Mathematics Undergraduate Research Showcase is being held this Friday November 8th in the atrium of McGowan South. Students from many disciplines will be taking part by giving short oral presentations or presenting posters. The oral and poster presentation sessions are open to all students (and it will be catered). Come see the research results your peers are generating, and enjoy a snack while you are at it! If you have a friend presenting, show up to support them! If you have an enemy presenting, pepper them with your hardest science questions! If someone-you-only-kind-of-know-from-that-one-thing-you-were-both-at is presenting, show up and stand awkwardly near each other trying to figure out how to start a conversation! So many choices!

The schedule of events is:

12:00 PM ‒1:15 PM     Oral Presentations

McGowan South 103 (Jenna Gonzalez, Sofia Laske-Headric and Andres Munoz, Dannette White)

McGowan South 104 (San Smiley, Nicolas Clarisse, Jessica Harris, David Graykowksi)

Help Send our Students to ACS Philly 2020!

Hello DePaul Students, Alumni, and Friends,

Between the costs of registration, lodging, and travel, going to conferences is expensive! While faculty can usually find funding to go to one conference a year or so, sending a group of students is usually prohibitively expensive. This is really unfortunate because going to a conference is such a transformative professional development experience for young chemists.

Therefore, we set up a crowdfunding site through “Inspire DePaul”, the DePaul University crowdfunding platform, to send 5 students to the American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting in Philadelphia in March 2020. The ACS meeting is a HUGE (ca. 15000 chemists) 5-day event. The students would be presenting their research in posters or talks, and their faculty adviser (Dr. Grice) would go to and advise them on how to get the most out of the experience. These students have never been to an ACS meeting before and in addition to presenting, would be able to network, learn cutting-edge chemistry, and immerse themselves in the global chemistry community.

You can help us make this happen by donating to their campaign

The campaign starts today and goes for a month. Donations are gifts to DePaul and so you get a gift receip. Funds only go towards supporting the students going to the conference. If you know someone who would be interested in supporting students as they grow as professional scientists, pass this on! Let’s get these students to Philly for ACS in the Spring of 2020!

Thank you for your help!

Seminar this Friday!

Come check out the Seminar by our own Dr. Karver this Friday. She will be sharing work that has been done by DePaul students in her group and with collaborators. Her work will be especially interesting to those interested in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, and diseases such as inflammation. She also does a lot of organic synthesis in her work. All majors/areas of interest welcome! See you there!

Meet and Greet on Oct 24th

We will have a Departmental Meet and Greet on Oct 24th from 11:30 to 1:30. We’ll have refreshments and faculty and staff will introduce themselves and talk about what they teach/research/work on in the department. This is a great chance to meet faculty you will be taking classes from or find info on opportunities such as research or being a TA. Students of all majors are welcome! Refreshments will be served.

oSTEM Meetings every Friday!

Come join oSTEM and be part of our weekly meetings, where we will be having seminars and discussions about topics affecting the LGBTQ+ community in the STEM fields! Check out the flyer below for the topics that will be discussed for the remainder of the quarter. Everybody is welcome!

Undergraduate Research Showcase on November 8th

Are you a CSH undergrad who has done research here at DePaul? Talk to your advisor about presenting your work at Showcase! You can present a poster or give a talk on what you have been doing. The showcase will be November 8th, and a call for posters and talks will be out soon. Mark your calendars and we look forward to seeing you there. Every year we have many students who have done research in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry present their work!

#TBT: Pi Day 2018

We’re throwin’ it back to Pi Day of 2018 when Dr. Baum Wagner, Dr. Niedziela, and Dr. Karver all took turns throwing pies into the faces of Dr. French and Dr. Griffin.
